Our Fortnite classes are designed to enhance essential communication skills in a fun and engaging way. Throughout the course, our students will be ranked based on their skills in teamwork, communication, cognitive abilities, and emotional regulation. Structured Classes

While each class is different, typically each session includes physical exercises, individual drills (to practice certain skills), teamplay (to focus on teamwork and communication) and finally pre- and post-class analysis, where students discuss their objectives and talk theory and strategy.

Structured Classes

Structured Classes

Physical Warmup

Gaming is not usually associated with physical activity. However, a short warmup is essential to get the blood flowing which helps with focus, attention and energy levels throughout the class. Doing a physical warmup is also critical in teaching kids to approach gaming with the same mindset as other sports, hence fostering a positive mental attitude towards it.

Physical Warmup

Physical Warmup

Competitions

During each class, students will form teams with their peers and play competitive matches, keeping in mind the objectives of the class as well as their own, personal goals. Moreover, every 8 weeks, Metalions Academy runs an Academy-wide tournament where students can put their Esports jerseys and compete alongside their friends against other students and perhaps even lift a trophy!

Competitions

Competitions

Outside of Class

Becoming good or even expert at something is about putting consistent effort inside and outside the classroom, which is why training doesn’t end with the bell. After class, students take home assignments like the latest patch notes (to learn about the current optimal strategies), quizzes, complete creative work or watch tutorials. Each student will have an academy binder, to help them keep track of their assignments, progress and notes.

Ranks

Ranks in games are akin to belts in Karate, they are crucial for the students motivation but also are instrumental at teaching kids the value and payoff of hard work. At MLA we adopt a unique approach to promoting players. Through competitions and regular examinations, our coaches will rank students based on their skill in game (30% of the mark), out of game skills (communication, teamwork etc. also 30% of the mark), effort and progression (20% of the mark) and finally their individual goals, whatever they may be (final 10% of the mark).

Our Academy Team

Preparing aspiring players for the future ahead

ACADEMY DIRECTOR
Dale Adams

As the Academy Director, I oversee the New Meta Academy and its coaches. Esports and gaming have defined my career path for many years, giving me experience in almost every area of the industry. So far, I have coached over 150 students, managed globally successful esports organisations, overseen content production across all social platforms, and mentored gamers from their sofa to success. The New Meta Academy is a project that I am proud to lead, and I love seeing our students thrive and grow.

HEAD Coach
Oscar "Toast" Asewando

Hey there, I’m Oscar (or “Toast”) and I have been deeply immersed in esports for over 5 years. Co-running an esports team, I’ve collaborated with top players, orchestrated big events, and helped to clinch deals up to six figures.

What fuels me most is nurturing talent, helping rising stars shine both in competitive skill and personal brand.

Ready to elevate your game? Let’s make esports magic happen together.

Fortnite Coach
Zharion Alphonzo

I’m Zharion, one of Play New Meta Academy’s Fortnite coaches. I transitioned into Fortnite coaching after playing competitive Overwatch in student leagues for two years, and now enjoy passing on the skills I learned through gaming and esports to others.

After studying esports in college, I am now specialising in the industry by studying international business and esports event management.

FORTNITE COACH
Xander Bachrich-Mansfield

Hi, I’m Xander, one of New Meta Academy’s newer coaches. I might be new to New Meta, but I am definitely not new to the world of esports!

I’ve been active in the esports industry since 2017, where I began playing and coaching Overwatch professionally. Alongside this, I spent several years as a tournament organiser, worked in casting (commentating) for Counter-Strike esports tournaments, and completed an esports degree.

Minecraft Coach
Maciej “Magic” Kalisz

I am the New Meta Academy Minecraft Coding coach, and I go by the name Magic. At college, I currently study Information Technology, and I plan to continue studying Computer Science at a degree level in the future.

I started coding at the age of 10, and used those skills to begin developing and coding my own Minecraft servers. Since then, I have continued developing my coding skills and now pass what I have learned on to my students!

FAQ

A: Our Fortnite Academy is appropriate for children between ages 6-16.

A: No, booking a trial class is free. Just use the Promo Code ‘TRIAL’ at checkout. However, only two bookings can be made with the code, meaning if you book twice and do not attend either session, you will not be able to book another free trial in the future.

A: Sessions typically last for 90 Minutes, but we suggest to plan for some extra time before and after the session.

A: Each student is given a folder with additional worksheets that further develop the skills they are learning in the lessons.

A: Once you sign up for the group of your choice, you will pay for your first month. Following this, regular payments are taken on the same date on a monthly basis. If you pause your subscription, your next payment date will be moved accordingly.

A: The Academy is not term-based. Students are enrolled in perpetuity until they decide to stop or take a break. Instead of a final mark or certifications, students progress and work towards achieving rank promotions, with which they also receive certificates and trophies to signify and remember their achievements.

A: No, trials are a one-off event. If you’re interested in becoming a member after attending a trial class, you can choose the best time for you from our active weekly sessions.

A: Yes, all our coaches go through intense coaching courses and have thorough CRB and DBS checks.

A: All classes have the same structure and are broken down into several segments, including warmup, class time, and of course, gameplay and competition!
As students attend, they will be engaged socially with other students and our coaches. They will also learn how to convert their time online from a period of mindlessly interacting into one of constantly focusing on growth.

A: Our main objective is to create an environment where students can develop transferable life skills by utilising their passion for gaming.
Sessions focus on supporting growth in teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and adaptability.

A: Enrolling in the academy is helpful because our coaches guide students to approach their time online more consciously. It has become common for children to play video games for several hours a day, and we seek to convert that time into an activity that is both fun and productive. An example of how we do this is by having students participate in post-game analysis where they critically evaluate how they could improve after an online match, such as finding ways to work better in a team, overcoming miscommunication, and handling defeat.
Our Esports Academy is a controlled environment, and all our coaches are certified and motivated to demonstrate the value of competitive gaming.
Students are encouraged not to think of playing games without a purpose, just for fun. Instead, students work on core skills that are transferable to other aspects of life, such as leadership, working as a team, overcoming challenges, and many more abilities that will help shape and develop their future without sacrificing what they love the most – games.

A: If you aren’t able to attend a class, let us know and we can hold your membership until you’re able to attend once more.

A: Students who are on a spectrum or have some level of neuro-diversion who enjoy gaming have enjoyed a lot of success in the Academy.
Coaches are constantly looking to ensure that all the students in a session are enjoying the content as well as the social aspects of our academy. We work with parents and students to understand how best to incorporate all children into our sessions. Thus ensuring that things are moving at a comfortable pace and your child has enough room to grow.

A: Yes, all our coaches are given a course on how to work with and teach children who are neurodiverse and/or on the Spectrum.

A: Our Fortnite courses are ongoing with no defined beginning and end. Students can join whenever they are able and coaches will match age and skill levels to ensure each student has the best environment to grow.

A: Our Fortnite memberships include 4-hours of free gaming in our facilities every month. All students will also receive a custom Esports jersey in their 2nd month of membership.

A: Here at the Academy what we are doing plays a significant role in developing a healthy relationship between our students and their hobby of gaming. Students learn important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, critical thinking, communication, and more. All of which directly translate to everyday life. Not only that, but our service is a very unique combination for the gaming world that is extremely hard to find.

A: Our Academy Director, Dale Adams, has worked in Esports for over 10 years having coached professional players from all over the world from the highest levels.
He has coached over 400 Students of a wide range of ages.
All of our coaches have experience in professional gameplay and the wider esports industry.

A:

Weekly sessions are £100/month,
Twice-weekly sessions are £150/month.

A: For families that have longer commutes to our venues, we’d like to highlight a few solutions that some of our current members are using. The most common solution is to select weekly or bi-weekly memberships and to combine their child’s session with other tasks that parents need to get done, i.e. working (we have a lobby area free for parents to set up laptops), shopping, groceries, or even spending a bit of time at one of the many restaurants, cafes, or bars in the area.

Fortnite Academy members also receive 4 hours of free play every month, so after the 1 ½ hour academy sessions, they can stay an extra hour to play with friends at the academy, allowing the fun to last longer.

A: We host academy-wide tournaments every month where we reward some of our top competitors. These are open to all academy students who are eager to put their skills to the test.

A: The academy provides the fundamentals that are required to see success in esports, including teamwork, proven learning structures, and access to mentorship. Ultimately, the academy is a unique and hard-to-find starting point for kids with this aspiration. In addition, we also host events in our facilities that attract members of the esports community and may be leveraged to build connections with some of our academy students.

A: 116H Upper Street, Islington Square, South Arcade, N11QP, London

You can find us between Highbury & Islington and Angel tube stations. Equal walking distance either way!

A: We currently teach Fortnite and Minecraft, but we are also expanding to Valorant and Apex Legends in the near future.

A: Yes they are encouraged to bring their own equipment to maintain input consistency and enjoy the extra comfort of familiarity.

A: The games our coaches teach need precise control. Players must navigate through the game swiftly, make split-second decisions, and coordinate their actions accurately. This enhances hand-eye coordination, cognitive flexibility, and dexterity, which can benefit children in various aspects of life, such as academics and sports.

A: Every session we have team huddles involving every student to different aspects of the lesson. We will always do activities in groups and pair students together, developing teamwork and cooperation skills.

A: All of our coaches are trained to identify and understand which areas students need to improve in. We also provide the best foundation possible for helping our students succeed in the world of esports, helping them improve at their selected game, and providing a facility and equipment to practice or participate in tournaments.

Coding with Minecraft is a course designed for children to learn the basics of programming inside of a game they’re familiar with. Over 12 weeks, we’ll teach them the most important fundamentals which they’ll then be able to transfer into any programming language in the world.

Foundation

Foundation

What to Expect

Our goal on the Coding with Minecraft course is to provide children with valuable soft and hard skills. We will arm the students with all the basic knowledge they will need to understand any modern programming language and start to code by themselves. On top of that, they’ll be socialising with like-minded students and improving their teamwork and leadership skills in a context which is almost irreplicable outside. The students will also eventually be able to progress onto our higher-level courses which build on top of the basic knowledge and promote a lot more independence and creativity, allowing students to build projects based on loose guidelines and develop a portfolio of their work – something which will be very helpful to them should they want to pursue education or work in IT in the future.

What to Expect

What to Expect

Platform

We want children to feel comfortable when learning difficult new concepts, and Minecraft is the perfect platform for it. The built-in code editor lets children build something up very easily, whilst also seeing the results straight away in the game. It also allows us to slowly introduce a traditional programming language – primarily Python – without worrying about all the initial setup they’d usually need for it.

Platform

Platform

Projects

To keep children on track and assess their progress, they will be completing 4 projects during their time – one every 3 lessons. The project will focus on the topics from the 3 previous lessons, as well as building on top of knowledge from earlier in the course. Students will mostly work on these projects at home, but we will also spend some time at the end of each lesson to provide any support they may need. We will provide USB sticks for the students to be able to transfer their work between home and New Meta – we’ll cover how to use them during the first lesson. These are a gift from us, and students can use them long after they graduate! There is a guide on using these USBs that is available if you need it.
